Cancer Signal Detected with a Cancer Signal Origin for Head and Neck Cancer
“Relief that we caught this early.” - Rich
Rich’s Experience with the Galleri test
[Rich] My name is Rich and this is my story with Galleri.
Always been a gym nut. I owned a gym and so I really emphasized my health probably more so than most others. I made sure that I did regular checkups. My health was pretty superior for a long period of time.
[Dave Buckwald] My name is Dave Buckwald and I'm one of the founding partners of One Team Financial. We had this vision about a holistic planning firm. You know, we can really only control the money aspect of it, but we always talk about with our clients, your health and wealth to me go hand in hand.
"Money is important, but if you don't have your health, it's meaningless."
So, through Nationwide's relationship, we were able to offer Rich the Galleri test.
[Rich] Dave called me up one day and said, "I have this test I want you to take."
And I said, "Okay, tell me more about it."
And he says, "Well, it screens for cancer, right?"
I said, "Well, I'm very much about that. I want to know of that at all times."
My mother had colon cancer and that's what she died of.
[Barbara - Dave’s wife] Hi, my name is Barbara and I'm married to Rich. We've been married for 34 years. I'm a registered nurse. Health has been very important, um, you know, throughout all the years.
I honestly had never heard of the test prior to Dave calling him and mentioning it. And when Rich spoke to Dave about it and came to me and said, you know, he has this test, Nationwide is offering it. Dave asked me if he should take it. I thought it was a great idea.
[Rich] Made the appointment and they did the blood draw and it was as simple as that.
And then when I got it back, I was like, "Wo!"
"He had a Cancer Signal Detected."
[Barbara - Dave’s wife] The initial visit with the doctor at NYU, he looked at us all and just said,
"Yes, you have cancer and it spread to your lymph nodes."
I mean, at that point, my daughter and I just started crying and we just knew like your whole life just turns on a dime like that.
[Rich] But when I found out it was localized, I felt relief.
Even though it's stage three, I wouldn't know about this for another 6 months to a year and it then it would be too late.
The treatment for cancer can knock you out and it knocked me out, right? And my process to get back is going to be a long process, but I conquer.
I've since talked to Dave many times.
I'm so thankful that Dave is part of my life, that we picked Dave 30 something years ago to be a part of our lives, but also very thankful that Nationwide sees the importance of being more holistic than just wealth.
Based on a clinical study of people ages 50 to 79 around 1% are expected to receive a Cancer Signal Detected result, which includes a predicted Cancer Signal Origin. After diagnostic evaluation, around 62% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
The overall sensitivity in study participants with liver/bile duct cancer was 93.5% (100% for stage I, 70.0% stage II, 100% stage III, 100% stage IV).

The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. The Galleri test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of the test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.
Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of No Cancer Signal Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g., imaging) to confirm cancer.
If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.
The GRAIL clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The Galleri test was developed — and its performance characteristics were determined — by GRAIL. The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The GRAIL clinical laboratory is regulated under CLIA to perform high-complexity testing. The Galleri test is intended for clinical purposes
