Cancer Signal Detected with a Cancer Signal Origin of liver/bile duct
“The fact that I had such an early diagnosis made a considerable difference to my eventual outcome” - Neil
Neil’s Story with the Galleri test
[Neil] My name is Neil and this is my story with Galleri.
I originally came from Scotland and I have been over in the United States for over 30 years now. We currently live in Colorado. I live with my wife Pam and our dog Remy. We both like taking the dog out for long walks out in the trails.
I do have life insurance with Mass Mutual, and one day I received an email which at the time I really believed seemed almost too good to be true because it was offering a test that screens for many of the deadliest cancers.
At the time, you know, I had never heard of such a test, so I was almost a bit skeptical about it. So I did some research on it. I received the information from Mass Mutual and they basically just explained how to go get a blood test. It was just a vial of blood which was then sent off to GRAIL, and they said they'll get back in touch with me about results.
I felt since I'd already had cancer back in 2018 that I didn't really expect to get it again, so I was really hoping just to get a result that says no, you're still cancer-free, it's not a problem.
I received a call from the telemedicine provider. The result showed there was a Cancer Signal Detected with a predicted origin of liver and bile duct.
I then got in touch with my doctor and he immediately set up some diagnostic procedures, and that did in fact show a mass that was highly suspicious. Eventually I had a biopsy just to conclusively verify that it was cancer.
The cancer is called intra-hepatic, which means just inside the liver, and cholangiocarcinoma is the type of cancer. It's one of the fairly aggressive types of cancer.
I certainly didn't have any symptoms when I had taken the test.
I think it might have gone on for another nine months or more before I had symptoms enough that I would consider going to a doctor.
The fact that I had such an early diagnosis made a considerable difference to my eventual outcome because the longer it develops, obviously the worse it is, and the options for treatment are going to get fewer as time goes on.
I was surprised, to be honest with you, that Mass Mutual was offering this kind of a test, and I'm really grateful that they did because first of all I wouldn't have known the test existed. But second of all I'm not sure if I would have necessarily just run out and taken it right away. But given that opportunity, I was more than happy to take it.
Based on a clinical study of people ages 50 to 79 around 1% are expected to receive a Cancer Signal Detected result, which includes a predicted Cancer Signal Origin. After diagnostic evaluation, around 62% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
The overall sensitivity in study participants with liver/bile duct cancer was 93.5% (100% for stage I, 70.0% stage II, 100% stage III, 100% stage IV).
The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. The Galleri test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of the test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.
Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of No Cancer Signal Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g., imaging) to confirm cancer.
If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.
The GRAIL clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The Galleri test was developed — and its performance characteristics were determined — by GRAIL. The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The GRAIL clinical laboratory is regulated under CLIA to perform high-complexity testing. The Galleri test is intended for clinical purposes
