Jack's story with the Galleri® test.
[Jack] My name is Jack and this is my story with Galleri. I live in Indiana with my wife of 36 years, Angie. We have three grown children. We live on the water, so we boat a fair amount. I’m an avid golfer, and in the off season we enjoy snow skiing as well as hiking, so we’re a fairly active family.
We met with our doctor and he described a proactive approach to healthcare. It’s like—well shoot why wouldn't we do this?
[Dr Hsieh] There are so many technological advances going on in healthcare today, which is so exciting. When we found out that there was a test available—a single blood test that screens for many of the deadliest cancers—we wanted to know about it and learn about it.
[Angie] We were so excited when Jesse recommended this test. I have a little bit of a family history with cancer, so of course we were on board.
[Jack] The question I asked was, what does it look like? What was described was, “Hey, when we do your lab work on a blood draw, we send it into GRAIL and they do an analysis.” There was no pain. There was no real time commitment. So, it was really just something that was very easy.
Approximately two weeks after I took the test, I got a call from my doctor.
[Dr Hsieh] So I called Jack to tell him that there was a Cancer Signal Detected with a predicted origin of head and neck cancer.
[Angie] When we got that call, we were in shock. We couldn’t believe it. He lead a very healthy lifestyle. He eat well. I exercise.
[Jack] I had a CT scan. I had my throat scoped and evaluated. Nothing seemed to show up. We reached a point where we didn’t know what it was, if it was anything, but we could not find it.
So I had a second Galleri test six months after the first one, and the results came back the same. We had missed something somehow. And so the search began again.
[Dr Hsieh] This time around, we did a PET scan, and it showed up a very faint signal in his neck—but we still had to go find it. We ended up biopsying several areas of his head and neck, including my tonsillar area and vocal cords. The biopsy came back positive from his tonsil.
He ended up having radiation and chemotherapy. He’s now been in remission since.
[Angie] It was a process. It was a journey. But he handled it well. And the fact that Galleri is even available—and that we could detect it early—I would highly recommend this test.
[Jack] Galleri will definitely remain in my proactive healthcare going forward.
Based on a clinical study of people ages 50 to 79 around 1% are expected to receive a cancer signal detected result which includes predicted cancer signal origins. After diagnostic evaluation, around 62% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
The overall sensitivity in study participants with head and neck cancer was 85.7% (63.2% for stage I, 82.4% stage II, 84.2% stage III, 96.0% stage IV).
The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. The Galleri test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of the test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.
Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of No Cancer Signal Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g., imaging) to confirm cancer.
If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.
The GRAIL clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The Galleri test was developed — and its performance characteristics were determined — by GRAIL. The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The GRAIL clinical laboratory is regulated under CLIA to perform high-complexity testing. The Galleri test is intended for clinical purposes
