Dave’s Story with the Galleri test

[Dave] My name is Dave, and this is my story with Galleri.

Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with my partner, Walter, of 32 years. I have quite a few passions. I love my tennis. I enjoy the gym and swimming, travel a lot.

I was at my doctor's office and he's a hero. I was getting the results from my yearly physical. He just mentioned there's this Galleri test. Would you like to take it?

I said, sure. I didn't worry a bit. I was positive. I was picture perfect, healthy.

Walter and I were out for dinner. It was a Friday night. My doctor called me. If your doctor calls you from his personal phone, you answer.

He said, "I don't want you to be concerned, but there was a Cancer Signal Detected, and I'd like you to clear your Monday morning and come in and see me."

I learned that I have an incurable but treatable blood cancer. It's called Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia.

The doctor said he's got a lot of tools in his toolbox, so, and I got on a treatment. It's monoclonal antibodies. The monoclonal antibodies seem to be working.

[Walter] The initial thing was a shock. 

The first thing that I really thought about was what do we do now to take care of this?

We're ... Well, one thing we did decide very quickly was that we were not going to let this really change our lives.

We were going to continue to do what we like to do.

That  has been good for both of us, psychologically.

And I'm grateful and happy, and I think you can see a smile on my face usually, and I just wanna be healthy and live my life and have fun.

I've been really lucky and fortunate to discover the cancer early on.

Based on a clinical study of people ages 50 to 79 around 1% are expected to receive a Cancer Signal Detected result, which includes a predicted Cancer Signal Origin. After diagnostic evaluation, around 62% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis. 

The overall sensitivity in study participants with liver/bile duct cancer was 93.5% (100% for stage I, 70.0% stage II, 100% stage III, 100% stage IV).

The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. The Galleri test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of the test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.

Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of No Cancer Signal Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g., imaging) to confirm cancer.

If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.

The GRAIL clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The Galleri test was developed — and its performance characteristics were determined — by GRAIL. The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
