Walt's personal experience with finding early stage liver cancer

Walt's story with the Galleri test

A Cancer Signal Detected with a predicted origin of liver.

Walt: My name is Walt and this is my story with Galleri. Married, two children, two wonderful grandchildren. I had a 30-year career with the Carpenters and I'm retired from the Carpenter's Union. The Carpenter's Union offer me tremendous healthcare. They are very pro-preventative healthcare. Every month or so, we get literature from them saying we have a new thing that they're offering. So this thing comes across called the Galleri Cancer Screening. My wife said, "Walt, we need to get this test. This is important." She said, "This test can screen for many of the deadliest cancers." It's a basic blood draw and they send it to Galleri Lab. So I get this call and he said, "Walt, there's a cancer signal detected in your bile duct." We contact our doctor first off, and he said, "Well, I want to order a ultrasound for you. And I also want to do this blood test. It has to do with cancer markers in your liver area." Comes back positive. There's a tumor in my bile duct in my liver. This can't be. I can't have cancer. I'm recently retired. I'm only 63. I'm too young to die. I got these grandchildren. I got to see them through. We got life milestones to go through. Geez, my daughter, she depends on me, my wife. Jesus, I don't know what she would do without me. It was a total of seven weeks from the time I got the result to the time I was on the operating table.

Peggy: No symptoms, nothing. Had no idea that that little monster, that tumor was in there.

Walt: They were able to get the cancer, only because they caught it so early.

You're not doing it for yourself. You're doing it for your loved ones.

Peggy: His cancer is very rare and very aggressive. And from the moment we walked in, all the doctors could not believe he was sitting there. And they said, "This is the type of cancer that is not normally caught until it's in stage three or four and it's metastasized." He was lucky enough that it got caught in stage one. The Galleri test is what caught the cancer. And I know people say ignorance can be bliss, but not in the case when it comes to cancer because the sooner you find it and the sooner it's detected, the sooner it can be dealt with.

Walt: You're not doing it for yourself. You're doing it for your loved ones. If you have grandchildren like me, man, they're the best.

Narrator: Based on a clinical study of people ages 50 to 79 around 1% are expected to receive a Cancer Signal Detected result, which includes a predicted Cancer Signal Origin. After diagnostic evaluation, around 62% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
The Galleri test is prescription only. The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer such as those age 50 or older. It is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, 21 years or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment. Galleri should be used in addition to routine cancer screening. Galleri does not detect a signal for all cancers. False positive and false negative results do occur.

The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. The Galleri test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of the test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.

Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs, and symptoms. A test result of No Cancer Signal Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g., imaging) to confirm cancer.

If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.

The GRAIL clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The Galleri test was developed — and its performance characteristics were determined — by GRAIL. The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The GRAIL clinical laboratory is regulated under CLIA to perform high-complexity testing. The Galleri test is intended for clinical purposes
