What if we found cancer early enough to make a difference

The Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test from GRAIL looks for a signal in the blood that could indicate the presence of cancer. The test has found a signal across 50+ types of cancer.1 Through a pilot program, the Galleri test is available at no cost*† to eligible Maine Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Plan HMO members* who purchased their insurance on the Maine Health Insurance Marketplace or directly from Harvard Pilgrim and who also meet all the eligibility requirements listed below.

The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. Galleri should be used in addition to healthcare provider recommended screening tests.

Actionable results

If a cancer signal is found, the results can predict the tissue or organ associated with the signal. This helps your healthcare provider guide the next steps to determine if cancer is present.

The Galleri test looks for a signal associated with active cancer and does not predict your future genetic risk for cancer. Galleri is a screening test and does not diagnose cancer. Diagnostic testing is needed to confirm cancer. The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur. Galleri should be used in addition to screening tests your healthcare provider recommends.

What is the Galleri test?

Galleri is a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test that looks for a cancer signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer. It's a screening test, which means that while it does not diagnose cancer, it can improve your chance of finding it early.

What do Galleri test results mean?

What does a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result mean?

The Galleri test looked for a cancer signal in your blood sample and did not find one.

In a clinical study, 1.5% of individuals with a No Cancer Signal Detected result had cancer.2

This result does not completely rule out the possibility of cancer. The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. This result does not predict whether you will develop cancer in the future.

NEXT STEPS

Continue with any routine cancer screenings your healthcare provider recommends. Do not ignore cancer signs or symptoms if they occur as this could lead to a delayed diagnosis.

What does a “Cancer Signal Detected” result mean?

The Galleri test looked for a cancer signal in your blood sample and found one. About 1 out of every 100 tests has a Cancer Signal Detected result.2*

This result also includes one or two predictions of the tissue type or organ associated with the cancer signal, called "Cancer Signal Origin."

In a clinical study, around 4 out of 10 people with this result were diagnosed with cancer after diagnostic testing.2

*In the PATHFINDER study2, out of 6,578 participants tested with Galleri, 58 had a Cancer Signal Detected result.

Through a simple blood draw, the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test detects a cancer signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer, many of which are not commonly screened for today.

The Galleri test does not detect all cancers and not all cancers may be detected in the blood.

The Galleri test is intended to be used in addition to, and not to replace, other cancer screening tests your healthcare provider recommends.

The Galleri test looks for a signal present in the blood that may be associated with cancer at the time of your blood draw. If a cancer signal is detected, the results can point to where in the body the cancer signal is coming from to help your healthcare provider guide next steps. The Galleri test is recommended to be used along with other cancer screening tests such as colonoscopy or mammogram.

Family history is one of many risk factors associated with cancer development. Other risk factors include age, eating habits, lifestyle, living or working environments, genetics, and many others**.

Currently, the pilot program is limited to those age 50 and older and meet one clinical criterion:

  • First-degree relative (biological parent or sibling) with cancer*
  • Cancer survivor who has completed treatment at least 5 years ago*
  • Currently smokes or quit smoking fewer than 10 years ago
  • Elevated BMI
    • Female ≥ 30 kg/m2
    • Male ≥ 35 kg/m2

* excludes basal or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin

When you submit your test request, you may ask for a pre-test consultation with a PWNHealth provider to discuss whether the test is right for you. This optional consultation is included in the pilot program at no cost to you.

In a clinical validation study (CCGA3*), the Galleri test detected a cancer signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer across all stages.

*Circulating Cell-Free Genome Atlas (CCGA) sub-study

The Galleri test detects a cancer signal shared by more than 50 types of cancers, however not all cancers can be detected in the blood. Recommended routine cancer screening tests such as colonoscopy or mammogram have been shown to reduce cancer deaths.

The Galleri test is intended to be used in addition to and not to replace these tests and can help maximize the benefits of early cancer detection. Missing recommended screening or ignoring symptoms could lead to a delayed diagnosis of cancer.

Based on data from our studies, the Galleri test has shown a low false-positive rate of 0.5% (detects a cancer signal when no cancer is present). This means that in approximately 200 people tested, only one person would be expected to receive a false positive result.

The Galleri test development was supported by what is believed to be one of the largest clinical study programs in genomic medicine, with more than 20,000 participants at more than 140 clinical study sites, including the Mayo Clinic, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Sutter Health, Oregon Health & Science University, Intermountain Healthcare and U.S. Oncology Network.

The Galleri test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Galleri is a Laboratory Developed Test. GRAIL’s clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). GRAIL’s clinical laboratory is regulated under CLIA to perform high-complexity testing.

A healthcare provider from PWNHealth, an independent telemedicine provider, will review your request and clinical eligibility within one week. They will approve your request and order the test, if appropriate.

If the PWNHealth provider approves your request, you will be shipped a Galleri specimen collection kit and receive an email confirmation with instructions for how to schedule your blood draw. Please not break the quality seal on the Galleri specimen collection kit.

When your Galleri specimen collection kit arrives, you can schedule a blood draw appointment at no cost to you at one of GRAIL’s partner labs, or attend a GRAIL blood draw event. Please note, NorDx is now a partner lab option and they conduct Galleri blood draws Monday-Thursday.

Test results will be ready about two weeks after completing your blood draw.

The cost for completing your blood draw at some place other than one of GRAIL’s partner labs, or at a GRAIL blood draw event, will not be covered by this pilot program; you will be responsible for payment.

If your Galleri test request is approved and your Galleri specimen collection kit has arrived, you can schedule a blood draw appointment with one of GRAIL’s partner labs at no cost to you, or attend a GRAIL blood draw event. Please note, NorDx is now a partner lab option and they conduct Galleri blood draws Monday-Thursday.

The cost for completing your blood draw at some place other than one of GRAIL’s partner labs, or at a GRAIL blood draw event, will not be covered by this pilot; you will be responsible for payment.

Bring your unopened Galleri specimen collection kit and your completed and printed “Test Requisition Form” from PWNHealth to your blood draw appointment.

You will receive these items if your eligibility for the Galleri test is approved.

  • A Galleri specimen collection kit will be mailed to you within one week after your request is approved. Do not break the quality seal on the specimen collection kit. It should be opened by the lab technician who draws your blood sample.
  • A completed Test Requisition Form will be emailed to you from the ordering provider at PWNHealth. Remember to print the form and bring it to your appointment.

The Test Requisition Form is the ordering form the provider at PWNHealth completes to order the test for you.

If the provider orders your test, you will receive this document in an order confirmation email from GRAIL.

No preparation or fasting is required.

Some lab technicians may ask if you have fasted (no eating or drinking), but this is not required for the Galleri test.

Please do not break the quality seal on the collection kit. The kit should be opened by the lab technician who draws your blood sample.

Store the collection kit at room temperature until your blood draw appointment. The contents are sensitive to extreme temperatures. For example, avoid storing your collection kit in the trunk of your car.

Your next step is to schedule your blood draw at a GRAIL partner lab or at a GRAIL blood draw event.

The Galleri specimen collection kit includes instructions for the lab technician, two tubes for the blood sample and packing materials to ensure the sample is safely shipped to GRAIL.

Please do not break the quality seal on the specimen collection kit. It should be opened by the lab technician who draws your blood sample.

The lab technician who draws your blood will pack and ship your sample back to GRAIL for processing.

Your sample will arrive at GRAIL one to two business days after your blood draw.

The test uses approximately 1.5 tablespoons (or about 20 mL) of blood in two tubes, typically from a vein in your arm.

Your sample will arrive at the lab one to two business days after your blood draw. Your results should be available to the PWNHealth provider who ordered your test within 10 business days (Monday — Friday, excluding holidays) from the time your sample is received at GRAIL.

You will receive your results about two weeks after your blood draw from the ordering PWNHealth provider.

If you no longer wish to receive your Galleri results, please contact PWNHealth to request a cancellation at gc@pwnhealth.com or 888-494-7333.

If you require further assistance, please contact GRAIL Customer Service at customerservice@grail.com or 833-694-2553.

This means that no cancer signal was found in your blood test. However, not all cancers can be detected by the Galleri test. Continue with all routine screening tests that your healthcare provider recommends. Missing routine screenings or ignoring symptoms can lead to a delayed diagnosis of cancer.

PWNHealth also offers optional post-test counseling to discuss your result, which is included as part of the pilot.

This means that there is a suspicion of cancer and additional tests are needed to see if you have cancer. The provider who ordered your test will share this result with you and discuss your next steps.

When you request the test, please enter your primary healthcare provider’s contact information; if you enter this, your test results are automatically shared if a cancer signal is detected. If you do not have a primary healthcare provider, PWNHealth can help you find one in your area.

The Galleri test can point to where in the body the cancer is coming from to help your primary healthcare provider guide next steps. Your primary healthcare provider should order appropriate follow-up testing to confirm if cancer is present.

The pilot program does not cover or pay for follow-up diagnostic procedures (e.g., imaging, biopsies, other laboratory tests, etc.). You may incur cost share expenses such as co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance. Please contact Members Services via the phone number listed on the back of your Harvard Pilgrim member ID card to determine covered expenses and your potential costs related to follow-up procedures that your provider may recommend.

If a diagnostic evaluation after a “Cancer Signal Detected” result with Galleri does not confirm cancer, you may be eligible for a complementary re-test with Galleri.

The request for a re-test must be placed by the healthcare provider who will order the re-test. The re-test must be administered within 3 – 6 months after the initial Galleri test. To initiate a request for a re-test, the healthcare provider managing your diagnostic evaluation should contact GRAIL Customer Service at 833-MY-GALLERI (833-694-2553) or customerservice@grail.com.

The Galleri test is looking for the presence of cancer at the time your blood is drawn, but you may develop cancer in the future. The test does not measure your risk of developing cancer in the future, and it does not detect all cancers.

Yes, when you request the test, please enter your primary healthcare provider’s contact information; this will let the ordering healthcare provider share your Galleri test results automatically if a cancer signal is detected.

We will not automatically share a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result, but we encourage you to share it with your primary healthcare provider.

The healthcare provider who orders the test will receive your test result and share it with you. Your test result and medical information are confidential, and access is limited to individuals who need the information for a specific purpose, such as the ordering provider from PWNHealth and a GRAIL Patient Advocate. The ordering provider will help you understand your test results and determine your next steps. A GRAIL Patient Advocate can also provide post-positive test result support for diagnostic workup, benefits connectivity, assistance, and support with continuity of care / payer coverage assistance.

For example, if a cancer signal is detected, your test result will be shared with your primary healthcare provider (if you entered their contact information when you requested the test) so they can guide your next steps.

Additional details about privacy and data use are included in the Galleri patient portal when you request the test (see: Galleri Patient Information Sheet).

Your individual results are confidential and will not be automatically shared with your health plan. Your health plan will only automatically receive the member ID number and date of service for each member who completes the Galleri test. Your test results will be shared with the healthcare provider who ordered the test. Additionally, you can provide GRAIL permission to have the ordering healthcare provider share your results with your personal healthcare provider. This will allow your personal healthcare provider to determine appropriate follow-up diagnostic procedures (e.g., imaging, biopsies, other laboratory tests, etc.). Please note that before you receive any follow-up diagnostic procedures, your health plan may need to evaluate the coverage. Your personal healthcare provider may need to share the test results with your health plan for prior authorization purposes.

The Galleri test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those aged 50 or older. The Galleri test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a healthcare provider. Galleri is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of Galleri is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.

Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs and symptoms. A test result of “No Cancer Signal Detected” does not rule out cancer. A test result of “Cancer Signal Detected” requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures (e.g. imaging) to confirm cancer.

If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False-positive (a cancer signal detected when cancer is not present) and false-negative (a cancer signal not detected when cancer is present) test results do occur. Rx only.

GRAIL’s clinical laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
